Description:

This product bundles Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition and Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on together into a single product. It includes five client access licenses (CALs) for each, which can be used for either users or devices.

Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition: Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition provides small organizations with many of the features used by large organizations — folder and printer sharing, an email server, tools to manage Internet access, internal websites (intranets), remote access, support for mobile devices, and backup/restore tools — in an integrated product that supports up to 75 users.

Small Business Server 2011 is available only as a 64-bit operating system and can be installed only on a server with a 64-bit processor.

Remote Web Access gives any worker with a web browser secure access to email, internal websites, shared folders, organization and administration links, and networked computers. Access can be restricted by assignment to groups or roles. Windows Mobile–based devices can access e-mail, calendar, contacts, and tasks from the server.

The organization is protected from unauthorized users and data loss with:

  • Built-in firewall protection: Automatic data backup and the ability to retrieve and restore previous versions
  • Automated patch and update management tools keep the server and networked computers up-to-date. Administrators can set the level of automatic approval and the times at which updates occur.


Small Business Server's management console provides administrators with a set of tabs and wizards that lets them perform all necessary tasks. The console's Home window shows at a glance by green check or warning icons whether security, updates, backups, and other functions are OK or need attention.

Included Technologies: Small Business Server 2011 Standard combines these Windows server technologies:

  • The core Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard technologies, including network tools and network security; file, print, and application sharing; and firewall protection (but not including technologies appropriate only to medium-to-large enterprises)
  • Exchange Server 2010 Standard for email, messaging, personal information management, and shared calendaring
  • SharePoint Foundation 2010 for an internal website
  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Express for managing the data of the internal website

Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on: Small Business Server 2011 Premium Add-on supplements the technologies of Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition. It is intended for small organizations that have limited IT resources but still need to run a large number of line-of-business applications. The add-on includes SQL Server 2008 R2 for Small Business plus a license for Windows Server 2008 R2 in addition to the one included in Small Business Server 2011 Standard Edition.

Features: 
  • Under the Software Assurance programme, customers acquire the right to install any new release of products covered in the agreement during the term of their coverage.
  • Hyper-V (available only for 64-bit platforms) provides tools for creating and managing a virtualized server computing environment, allowing organisations to reduce the amount of hardware needed to run server workloads, to reduce the amount of time it takes to set up hardware and software and reproduce test environments, and to run different operating systems on a single server.
  • The optional Server Core installation provides a minimal environment for running specific server roles — Active Directory Domain Services, Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS), Internet Information Services 7.0, and Hyper-V — reducing the maintenance and management requirements and also the exposure to attack for those server roles.
  • Windows Server 2008 delivers a unified platform for Web publishing that integrates IIS, ASP.NET, and Windows Communication Foundation and also supports SharePoint Services.
  • Application Server is a new server role in Windows Server 2008. Application Server provides an integrated environment for deploying and running custom business applications that are built with Microsoft .NET Framework version 3.0.

Description:

The Windows Server 2008 server operating system enables a network server to handle a diverse set of roles — such as print server, domain controller, web server, and file server — and to be the platform for separately acquired server applications — such as Exchange Server or SQL Server.

The Datacenter Edition is optimized for large-scale virtualization; its license allows one server to run an unlimited number of Windows Server instances. It is scalable to 2 TB of RAM and 64 processors. It serves the needs of organizations with large workloads, such as databases or enterprise resource planning. The R2 version updates the Hyper-V virtualization environment, improves power management, enables remote connectivity without a VPN, and adds features designed specifically to work with client computers running Windows 7.

Here are some notable features of this product:

  • Hyper-V provides tools for creating and managing a virtualized server computing environment, allowing organizations to reduce the amount of hardware needed to run server workloads, to reduce the amount of time it takes to set up hardware and software and reproduce test environments, and to run different operating systems on a single server.
  • The Datacenter Edition supports a virtually unlimited number of virtual private network (VPN) connections and authentication of a virtually unlimited number of network access service and network policy server connections.
  • Failover clustering and dynamic hardware partitioning minimize disruptions of services and applications.
  • Application Server is a new server role in Windows Server 2008. Application Server provides an integrated environment for deploying and running custom business applications that are built with Microsoft .NET Framework version 3.5.


Important: The R2 version requires a 64-bit system. Organizations that want to run Windows Server 2008 on a 32-bit system can receive a donation of this product and then obtain the older SP2 version from Microsoft, either by downloading or by purchasing the DVD-ROM.

Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition R2 requires a minimum of two processors.

This plus user client access license (CAL) can be used only in conjunction with a standard Lync Server user CAL. It supports the enterprise telephony capabilities of Lync Server on any number of computers or other devices (for example, when an employee accesses the server from a computer at work and another at home).

Audio, video, and web conferencing and application-sharing capabilities for Lync Server require a separate license, the enterprise CAL. To enable all features, all three CALs (standard, enterprise, and plus) are needed.

Device CALs are also available. A device CAL authorizes one computer to access Lync Server's enterprise telephony capabilities, regardless of the number of users (for example, on a shared workstation).

Description:

This plus external connector (EC) license can be used only in conjunction with a standard Lync Server EC license. It supports enterprise telephony capabilities for any number of external users or devices accessing a single installation of Lync Server.

Audio, video, and web conferencing and application-sharing capabilities for Lync Server require a separate license, the plus EC license. To enable all features, all three EC licenses (standard, enterprise, and plus) are needed.

Generally, an external user is defined as anyone who is not an employee of the organization. For example, external users can include clients, suppliers, and alumni of the organization. External users do not include independent contractors, agents, service providers, or other persons providing services to or on behalf of the organization holding the license.

The EC license may not be used as a means of reselling or repackaging Lync Server as a hosted service.
