ICT Survey: The State of ICTs in the South African NGO Sector

The South African NGO IT Impact Survey 2007 was conducted by World Wide Worx during the first six months of 2007 in cooperation with SANGONeT, the non-profit NGO network provider. The purpose of the survey was to establish:

  • how effectively South African NGOs are using information technology;
  • The study will further determine the ICT resources that NGOs currently have
  • How they make use of these resources, what expectations they have of these resources and what benefits they gain from these resources.
  • Part of the outcome will be to highlight innovative uses to which NGOs are putting ICTs, and the role ICTs can play in development initiatives
  • whether it is making a difference in their ability to serve their constituencies; and
  • Whether they are adequately served by the IT industry.

The results will be used to explore means of improving NGOs’ access to IT, and their ability to benefit from such access. The study will also be useful in highlighting the needs of this sector, and how the industry can respond in order to meet the specific needs of the NGO sector.

The study will also form a baseline from which the growth and development of ICT within the NGO Sector can be monitored and tracked.
